From Two Strains of Penicillium Notatum

چکیده

This paper is the second of a series dealing with the analysis of penicillin by means of a chromatogram using solvent-phosphate buffer partition on a silica base. The first paper (Levi, 1948) described the development of this type of chromatogram which is based on that ofMartin & Synge (1941), and outlined the principles of its application to the study of penicillin. The work described was carried out mainly in 1943, and communicated privately to collaborating laboratories in Great Britain and the United States at the end of July in that year. Wider publication was not possible at that time owing to wartime secrecy restrictions. It deals with an examination of the crude penicillin produced by two strains of Penicillium notatum grown under different conditions, and shows clearly that the main active constituents ofthe two products are different; a fact which was not appreciated until the work was carried out. The further examination of the crude product is also described and shows the existence of still other penicillins.

Cultural Characteristics of Penicillium Notatum in Relation to the Production of Antibacterial Substance: Indication of the Dual Nature of the Antibacterial Substance.

Of the bacterial antagonists thus far known to be produced by microorganisms, the most effective in bactericidal action against Brucella abortus is the culture filtrate from a strain of Penicillium notatum (Kocholaty, 1942). Another antibacterial substance, penicillin, also obtained from a culture of a strain of Penicillium notatum, but with very little potency against Brucella abortus, has bee...

Inhibitory effect of various aqueous medicinal plant extracts on citrinin production and fungal biomass by Penicillium notatum

Citrinin is a nephrotoxic mycotoxin produced by several species of the genus and Monascus. Citrinin is generally formed after harvest and occurs mainly in stored grains. efficacy of different concentrations of aqueous leaf extracts of Rhazya stricta Decne and Cleome amblyocarpa two fungal strains Penicillium notatum and Aspergillus niger and fungal biomass by the isolates was suppressed, depend...

Antibiotics in the chemical communication of fungi.

In dual cultures Oudemansiella mucida and Xerula melanotricha (basidiomycetes) react to the presence of living Penicillium notatum or P. turbatum with an increased production of strobilurin A (1) or X (2). P. notatum in turn reacts to the two basidiomycetes or their antibiotic strobilurin A alone with the production of N-(2-hydroxypropanoyl)-2-aminobenzoic acid amide (3) or chrysogine (4). P. m...

Oxidative ring fission of the naphthoquinones lapachol and dichloroallyl lawsone by Penicillium notatum.

The naphthoquinones lapachol and dichloroallyl lawsone readily undergo oxidative ring fission when incubated with several fungi and streptomycetes. Penicillium notatum was employed to produce the ring fission product of dichloroallyl lawsone which was isolated and characterized by spectral analyses and chemical synthesis. The mechanism of oxidative ring fission of lapachol was studied by growin...

Purification and properties of Penicillium glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase.

1. Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase was isolated and partially purified from a thermophilic fungus, Penicillium duponti, and a mesophilic fungus, Penicillium notatum. 2. The molecular weight of the P. duponti enzyme was found to be 120000+/-10000 by gelfiltration and sucrose-density-gradient-centrifugation techniques. No NADP(+)- or glucose 6-phosphate-induced change in molecular weight could ...
